Hope you are all enjoying the happiest Christmas-time! (Or indeed, any of the many winter festivals!)
I can’t believe it! Nearly 2025! That’s a quarter of the 21st Century over!
“Quarter 1”, as I’ll call it, has received mixed reviews. Some things have improved, others have declined, and some things have just popped out of the ether! After a so-called ‘winter’ in the 90’s and 00’s, AI has taken the world like a wildfire. Not mentioning the good, the bad and the ethics surrounding it, it is accelerating itself and everything around it faster than it has before. Another element of change that has sprung up surrounds us in the climate (and yes, I am avoiding the doom phrase…). These are only two items in the long Nice and Naughty event lists of Quarter 1. Exploring them will take us to well into the next quarter-century.
One key, crucial, absolutely vital thing will most definitely shape Quarter 2 of this century. The same as that for Quarter 3, and maybe even Quarter 4. Wait for it… us. AI and other technologies and innovations are growing, sure, but we shape their growth, applications and uses. Change of the climate is mostly ‘anthropogenic’, and we are the next generation of anthropos. We have the keys. Question is, will we open the right doors? Will we be able to explore and handle what we find behind each door with care and respect?
The answer for me is yes, I will definitely try to. I’m sure it is the same for you too.
The joy of Christmas shouldn’t end at midnight, 25th Dec. The warmth and hope will carry on into the new year, and I believe that a fresh, new and brighter Quarter 2 is ours for the building.
All that aside, on a more proximal level, have a wonderful last week of 2024. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all!
